Squarespace SEO 2018

Content is the reason search began in the first place
— Lee Odden

When I first started blogging, one of my biggest concerns was creating content that would help others. The term “Content is King” kept coming up in all the courses that I took. What did they mean? Simply put, writing quality content is the key to having good SEO and ranking high in search engines.

The Yoast plugin in Wordpress is one of the most popular tools because it helps format each blog post for good SEO. Unfortunately, Squarespace doesn’t have plugins and because of that, Squarespace had a bad rap for its SEO capabilities.

Well, ladies and gents this rumor is just not true and today we are going to chat a little about Squarespace SEO for 2018.

Squarespace SEO 2018

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process of improving your site's ranking in search results.

While the factors search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo use to rank sites are kept secret and change frequently, we build all known SEO best practices into every Squarespace site. (source)

Write Quality Content

As I mentioned before, “content is king”, so one of the major ways to optimize your blog or website for SEO is to write relevant content.

If your site is about how to create beautiful floral arrangements, then your content should reflect that.

Talking about your family vacation is great but maybe not for a floral arrangement blog. Having a consistent format also helps here. It helps your readers go through your blog posts with ease and keeps you on track with being consistent in your writing.

Free Tool

Pagezii is a really great tool to measure your SEO. It has more info than Yoast and a free Chrome extension. I use the Chrome extension tool for every single blog post I write. It ranks your webpage for Google, Bing and even foreign search engines. Go ahead and try it out. Hey it's free and very useful.

Inbound Links

Inbound links are links that point back to your site from an outside source.  How do I get inbound links you say? Well, the best way to get inbound links is to network with other bloggers and get guest posting opportunities. There is really no way around this. You may not be able to get these as soon as you publish your new blog or website so in the meantime it’s a good practice link to other posts or pages within your site.

How is Squarespace Great for SEO

When you sign up for the Squarespace platform, your site is generally optimized for SEO.

Your Squarespace site has a built-in sitemap. So when search engine crawlers or Google bots “crawl” your site to assess your site information, they communicate your site info back to the search engine algorithm which determines what key phrases your site should rank for and what position.

A sitemap makes it easy for the bots to get the information. It is important to keep your site organized so if your page is the about page, then the slug should be www.sitename.com/about

Optimizing Your Site with Ease

Squarespace makes it easy to add website descriptions that specifically show up in a search engine results. You can customize it by going to settings > basic information and update your description. You can also go to the blogging section and turn on the Accelerated Mobile Pages options which optimizes your site for mobile viewers.

A good experience for your viewers will make them want to come back or recommend your site to others. More page views equal better SEO. There is also a specific section for you to update your SEO information for your site in the settings area.

You can also optimize each blog post by adding tags and categories. It is a good idea to add your keywords to the tag section.

Lastly, you should go to the options section.  Here is where you customize your blog URL. You should add keywords here as well. You can also add an excerpt which would be a quick blog post description no more than 150 characters.

In summary, Squarespace is excellent for SEO and will continue to be in 2018. The ranking for your site depends on the effort and focus you put into the content you put on your site, and creating great content just takes creativity and good formatting.
